Our Events
For the IFEMED Journal Club, the journal year is replete with exciting and scintillating events that our board members, publication committee members, editorial board members, and members of the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association, IFUMSA, and the public look forward to it.
This is the icing on the cake for us at IFEMED. Here, the entire staff and Faculty take the day off to launch our journal and listen to a public lecture by a Guest Lecturer. The journal launch is the major highlight of the year for us because of how satisfying it is to see our hard work pay off.
Amongst the speakers who have given a public lecture at our Journal launch and Public Lecture Event are Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State; Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, the Director General of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), and Major General Dr.Obasina Ogunbiyi, President of the Critical Care Society of Nigeria.
This event also features the presence of Journal Club members of sister schools and prize giving for Professor Olikoye Ransome Kuti and Professor Olufisan Taiwo Memorial Essay Competitions.

The journal club meets at a predetermined time and place with interested parties to discuss and critically analyze recent articles in a chosen body of academic literature. Here, individuals can offer their opinions on a particular area of basic or applied research and brainstorm ways to apply evidence-based medicine to specific areas of medical practice. Every participant typically has the chance to share their opinion on a number of issues, including the suitability of a research design or methodology or both, the statistics utilized, the appropriateness of the controls that were used or research results and the implication of such results.
Every journal year, the Editorial Board of the Club invites a number of staff of the Faculty to facilitate a free month-long lecture on research writing. Participants take out a scheduled time every weekend to listen to lectures and ask questions. Individuals who have a minimum of 75% attendance are hereafter awarded a certificate. Amongst the themes we discuss at this seminar are: Introduction to Methods and Study Design, Research Ethics, Basic Statistical Analysis, How to write a Research Proposal, etc.
The Guest Authorship Programme was inaugurated in the 2021/22 journal year, to include non-journal club members of the clinical II and III classes of the Faculty of Clincal Sciences in our research writing and publication process. As such, the Editorial Board of the Journal Club call for applications annually where the candidature of every applicant is reviewed. Selected applicants have the opportunity to work alongside a Journal Club member and a supervising consultant on articles that are published in the Club’s Journal later that journal year.
